Mechaniloids
Origin
Mechaniloids originated in the early 20th century. Their “ancestors” were simple robots designed for repetitive tasks. Like welding a specific spot on a vehicle in an assembly line. Their programming was extremely rudimentary and generally consisted of only a few short, simple commands. They were also tied directly to a computer control system to ensure that they could be remotely disabled if necessary.
Over the years though having the robots tethered became an issue as the uses for robots expanded. (Certain jobs required mobility.) And while remote control options were possible, they weren't always reliable or the best options. So it essentially created a second problem… (Mobility being the first) How to control a robot? Thus their limited programming was drastically upgraded. They were given the ability to follow orders on their own under a set of guiding rules. (The core set being Isaac Asimov's 3 laws of robotics.)
This is where robots became divided into 2 types… Mechaniloids and Robots. Robots were given more human like qualities and more advanced abilities, though still bound by the 3 laws. (Which set the foundation for Reploids.) Mechaniloids on the other hand were kept fairly basic, usually inhuman and with tools or capabilities for work or war.
Manufacturers
There exist many different companies that serve to create mechaniloids. Most of them specialize in one or two fields though. Though most mechaniloids can be upgraded or modified fairly easily by anyone since they are fairly basic. (Often using designs that are very old and parts that haven't really changed much in decades. Even newer iterations of models are still largely based on the old schematics/systems.) This also means that mechaniloids are extremely cheap to produce. So they tend to be viewed more like disposable options. On the downside, they aren't made of the highest quality parts or the newest materials they do also tend to break down more and easier. (Which only further reinforces their disposable status.)
Use
Mechaniloids are employed in many situations, from construction jobs to security. They are typically overseen by a single reploid and given commands by them. When given an order they will attempt to carry it out single-mindedly, even if it means their destruction in the process. Though because of their relative simplicity, the maverick virus is extremely effective on them. It makes them obey mavericks and removes any trace of the 3 laws normally programmed into them.
