Teleportation System

Teleporters allow users to move one object from one location to another at extremely high rate of speeds.

History

Teleporters are another of Thomas Light's inventions. Pioneered for use to transport machines and loads of materials around very quickly. However the cost of the teleportation system was far too high to ever be practical for construction. Instead it was snapped up by Militaries so they could quickly deploy robotic shock troops to support their soldiers on the fields. This lead to the creation of the orbital satellite system necessary to transmit robots around the world.

After the fall of Dr. Wily though, when the world began to unite, the former teleportation satellites that had been launched by virtually every country were repurposed into a single network that would allow anyone with access to teleport anywhere in the world. At this point teleportation became viable for the transmission of more than just military hardware… Though it was still expensive so many companies often opted to just ship things manually. (Though some companies couldn't use the teleport system either due to the nature of their work. )

When reploids were created, reploids were given access and could travel to most locations without issue (though mavericks could also use this feature and actually developed their own secure locations) because of this teleportation became even more popular. Popular enough that virtually all companies actually were forced to stop using the teleporters to transport goods because of the high volume of reploid traffic. When the mavericks rose, this network proved extremely useful in deploying rapid response teams to contain situations within minutes of the outbreak, no matter where it was on the world.

Theory

Teleportation works by converting the machine's body into light energy that launches into the nearest satellite (targeted by the reploid's internal teleportation unit). Once they are launched they move at the speed of light (671 million miles per hour) to the satellite where they are bounced back to Earth at the intended destination. The transfer happens extremely quickly (under 5 seconds). In some cases they cannot beam directly to their target location (like if they are transferring around the world). In these cases the system is able to reflect the user to other satellites in order to reach their intended destination. This is the part that adds time to the transfer, though even still it's less than 5 seconds of total transfer time even if they have to bound off 20 satellites (due to moving at the speed of light between bounces).

The light energy of the former robot is comprised of several parts…

  • The first of which, the head of the beam contains the current location code, destination code and access key that allows them to use the satellite. (If a user had an access key for a location they weren't permitted to go, the satellite would simply spit them back to Earth where they launched from.)
  • The main body of the beam contains the reploid's entire body in light energy form.
  • Finally, the tail of the beam is the teleportation unit itself that causes the instantaneous transformation from light energy back into metal. This part of the beam is unstable and contact with a solid (and/or at the proper height/time/location) causes the reploid to rapidly convert back into their normal/solid form when the destination is reached.

Due to the type of energy they are converted to they can pass through most solid objects when the teleport system has engaged. (This allows them to exit through buildings or even teleport into buildings. Although teleporting into buildings is a lot trickier since they need to know what's in the area or else they risk simply rebounding.)

Security

Because Teleportation system potentially carries high risk of damage and injury, there are numerous security systems built into the teleportation systems to prevent problems.

Firstly satellites constantly emit a signal that allows reploids to lock onto them. (Allowing a reploid's systems to always know where a teleportation satellite is in the sky. They may not know consciously though.) Though this design (coupled with their high rate of use) also means that teleportation satellites can't lock onto users.

Secondly users cannot activate their teleportation system without them locking onto a satellite first (this usually happens when they they are reflected back to Earth). If they lose the satellite's signal then they become unable to teleport back until they reacquire that satellite's signal or they acquire another's.

Forcing users to lock on prevents situations where reploids launch into space as energy and continue forever because the satellite never reflected them.

Thirdly, to prevent those teleporting from causing too much damage to those who are around where they're landing… The teleport system generates a small wave of energy to push people out of the teleporter's space and allow them to reform properly. (Warning - those hit by teleportation energy waves may still suffer minor energy burns. It is non-lethal though even for humans. Medical examination is recommended however.)

Limitations

Despite it's high rate of speed and extreme accuracy in delivering troops, teleportation is not without it's flaws…

There are still places where teleporters do not work. Anywhere in space (like the moon) cannot be teleported to normally. (Which is why the Orbital Elevators and the space program exist.)

Teleportation can easily be jammed by erecting energy fields (attempting to enter the field causes a rebound, much like having wrong access. Though this does not prevent people from teleporting out from inside that field… just prevents teleporting in.) Some teleportation fields have specific access keys that allow some entry, but not others… Mavericks and Maverick Hunters both use this technology to prevent access to their respective bases.

Strong electro-magnetic energy signatures or nuclear power sources have been noted to interfere with teleportation. This means that transferring to and from power plants or nuclear reactors have proven problematic.

Given the relatively high volume of teleportation that occurs (virtually every reploid can use the teleport system), it's impossible to track who uses the system and where they're going (which is an advantage to both Hunters and Mavericks since then mavericks can't tell where Hunters are going and vice versa). And even if they could, the rate of teleportations occurring would quickly cause any logs to be filled and overwritten.

Humans cannot normally use the teleportation system. Unless they have a specifically designed suit of armor to convert their biologic functions into energy. If they don't have this type of suit then the teleportation function would kill them.

Finally, there is no method to lock onto a specific target with the teleport system alone and target them. This requires a clear visual on the target (using another satellite) or else they cannot easily teleport them. (They can make blind guesses and try forcing recalls… but this doesn't always work.)

Sensation

Reploids who engage the teleporter for the first time often remark that teleporting feels odd/funny. They tend to find it disorienting and makes them a bit unnerved.

Though repeated use of the teleportation system minimizes this feeling, it still doesn't really go away.
